SUBJECTS

MATHEMATICS

The biggest priority for the rest of the year will be computational fluency. This means addition and subtraction to 1000. We have been successful as a class in our addition so subtraction will be our focus. We've learned about regrouping and subtraction but are still working on this concept.

Multiplication and division are introduced in grade three but students are not expected to memorize facts at this level.

We have been learning other math concepts such as graphing, geometry, and patterns. I will continue to teach these ideas as well.

ENGLISH LANGUAGE ARTS

It has been wonderful to see this class grow in their reading abilities. Our goal will be to continue this trend. Your child should find a good fit book that they can read for ideally 20 minutes twice a day. (This is the ideal! Just do what you can.)

I will be asking them questions about what they're reading and I encourage you to ask them questions as well. They will be working on summarizing, identifying characters and setting, and making connections to what they are reading.

The students have been learning how to write using a writing process. We will continue to brainstorm ideas first, then write a rough copy, edit, and then write a good copy. We will also practice creating different kinds of writing, including letters, stories, and journal entries.

SOCIAL STUDIES AND SCIENCE

English Language Arts and Math will be our biggest priority but we will also spend time talking about science and social studies. In social studies, we will continue to learn about the First Nations groups around Canada with a focus on traditional dwellings. In science, we are going to learn more about how matter is made out of particles and thermal energy.

ADST, FINE ARTS, PE, AND CAREER EDUCATION

I will be looking at different ways to incorporate these subjects into your child's learning. Ms. Dochstader has an excellent web page that has fun and interesting ways your child can continue their music education.

I will also include fun art activities and options for physical exercise to help your child stay active and healthy. Here is a link to the BC Curriculum page and you can browse the different subjects.

MESSAGE TO PARENTS

The next few months are going to be different. We have always been a team when it comes to your child's learning. Now, that teamwork has changed. I will be sending out learning ideas for you to work with your child. Every single family will have a different learning situation so that means that we need to make priorities and we need to have options. My plan for the class is going to be guided by the BC Curriculum. Below is a brief summary of our goals for each subject and a link to the curriculum for reference and further reading.

The most important thing is that your child is happy and that you get to connect as a family. Please reach out to me with any questions or ideas that you have.
